The heart is separated into two sides by an inner wall called septum. The septum prevents the mixing of blood (oxygen poor blood in the right side and oxygen rich blood in the heft side) between the two sides. Congenital heart defect or defects at birth such as hole in the septum leads to the mixing of oxygen poor blood and oxygen rich blood.

ASD or Atrial Septal Defect is the hole in the septum between the hearts two upper chamber while VSD or Ventricular Septal Defect is referred to as a hole in the septum between the hearts two lower chambers.

To close the hole in the septum an open heart surgery is done and a patch is used. The patch is made of synthetic material like Dacron or a patch of pericardium which is the thick sac that surrounds the heart. In the surgery the heart is stopped and then opened. Typically the length of the stay in the hospital is about 5 days and complications arising out of the procedure are also seen to be minimal.

Certain problems are caused due to the hole in the wall between the two upper collecting chambers (ASD) or between the two bottom pumping chambers (VSD).

Symptoms of ASD or VSD will depend upon the size and the location of the defect and other associated heart defects. So the severity of the symptoms will depend on the kind or size of the defect and accordingly it can range from no symptoms at all to severe heart failure.

A major symptom of heart failure in a baby is difficulty in poor feedings and poor weight gain. In older children, heart failure may cause decreased exercise tolerance and shortness of breath.

It is also observed that depending on their size and location septal defects may close by themselves. Periodic check-ups will reveal if the defect or hole will close on its own and the cardiologist will likely wait a while to see if that happens naturally, before recommending surgical treatment.

In cases involving larger holes and severe symptoms, however, treatment with surgery or catheter closure with a device will be recommended and accordingly a surgical procedure will be needed.
